Suffice to say that rice is one of the most important crop plants internationally, more than half of the world’s population depend on rice as a food source. Oryza sativa spp. Japonica (cultivar Nipponbare) holds the distinction of being the first crop species to have its genome sequenced. The availability of a sequenced genome for a monocot plant (rice) and a dicot plant (Arabidopsis) allows for a comparative analysis of these two major groups of flowering plants.
